The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Is Coming To Town!
Why bring the Imagination Library to the Orrville, Dalton and Marshallville area?
Increasing children’s language and early literacy skills is essential to achieving our national goals related to school readiness, fourth grade reading, and high school graduation.
How does this program work?
The United Way and Dolly Parton Imagination Library collaboration began with the inclusion of Born learning tips about reading and parenting into four of the distributed books. Since 2005, that partnership has expanded to 140 United Ways in 28 states. The program delivers a book to children in their homes each month for the first five years of life. In 2008, almost 5.5 million books were mailed, and 17.1 million books have been mailed since the inception of the program.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Foundation provides and mails the books, and the local United Way registers participants, keeps the database, and pays the postage, about $30 per year per child.
Grants from the United Way campaign and the Orrville Rotary Club are helping provide the Imagination Library program for our first year, but anyone can help. Just $30 sponsors a child for a whole year. Mail checks to Orrville Area United Way, P.O. Box 214, Orrville OH 44667, and write 'DPIL' on the memo line.
Parents and guardians can now register children online: www.imaginationlibrary.com - click 'first time visitors', then the choice 'I would like to enroll my child.' The child must live in one of our United Way's three zip codes: 44667, 44618 or 44645.
